The Guild: Emily Lauderback Stewart, Color In Space
Years ago, interior designer and project manager Emily Lauderback Stewart hit on an idea to help clients plan color palettes for their homes. Her Color in Space Dwelling Palettes allow individuals to choose palettes that not only suit their color preferences, but also make them feel comfortable. “I’ve learned to explain it like music,” she says. “The key is the signature, and everything follows from that.”
Palette names are based on the moods typically created by the colors in a particular residence. With their warm, earthy colors, the ‘Bungalow’ and ‘Cottage’ palettes are among the most popular, but in the past 10 years Stewart has developed many others. She also notes which palettes accommodate high-Kelvin and fluorescent lighting, and which of them don’t.
Stewart uses the same palette-development process when she does interior design projects—except that each client gets a customized color palette. “I’ve been working with this for 25 years. I can walk into a home and just know which direction to go.”
