Lamps for the Table

ABOVE: Lindsay Art Glass ‘Desert Tree’ lamp with mica shade, 23" tall x 21" wide, $970. From Sue Johnson Lamps & Shades.

Whether it’s for general illumination, for bedside reading, or an objet d’art, a table lamp is a practical and useful focal point in the room.

Rules of thumb: Lamps for living spaces tend to be larger, 26" to 30" tall or more, depending on the size of the room, placement, and the scale of the furniture. Bedside lamps trend smaller, 20" to 25" or so. Desk lamps with swing arms fit available space. Large or exquisitely handcrafted, a table lamp may be a statement piece.
